Make it last

We work so hard planning the perfect event.  We get everybody together and make sure everybody understands what is going to happen.  Then we go to the event and students love it.  The problem comes when the event is over and we have nothing to spark our memory about the event.

I would encourage you to take lots of pictures at these events.  Give somebody a camera and just tell them to go crazy, but make sure they try to get pictures of as many students having fun as possible.  It is easy to get focused on one area or one funny student.  This could be a negative.

What this does is after the event you can now post pics to facebook for your students to see.  You could also print pictures for them if you want.  There is also the chance you could get one of those priceless pictures you turn into a poster to hang in your youth room.

These pictures will turn in to something your junior high students can look back on for years to come.  I have a friend that made a scrapbook each year of what happened in the junior high ministry, and the graduating seniors loved to look back on what they did when in junior high.

Pictures can make your event that you work so hard on last.  More importantly it can help your junior high students remember how much fun they had as they gathered for a youth group event.  Sometimes you even get a picture of a day when a student made a life changing decision.

Be ready!  You can get a really good quality camera for under $200 and just shoot away. You won’t regret it.

Camp is finished

Over the past couple weeks I have spent a great deal of time at camp as many of you know.  It has been an incredible experience for me.  I believe the students and other adults involved in these camps were truly blessed as well.  The biggest thing I took away from my time at camp is to make sure that I take advantage of every opportunity I have when it comes to ministering to other people.  It doesn’t matter if you are dealing with students, adults or young children.  We need to be proactive with our faith.

June 14th-16th my wife headed up a Mother/Daughter Camp.  We had 117 campers and it was a great experience.  It didn’t hurt that we had Jamie Grace kicking off our event with a concert and as part of the concert Jamie’s mom, Mona Harper, spoke to the mothers and daughters.  At this camp Mothers and daughters were able to enjoy time with each other, and hopefully begin some habits of talking, praying, and reading the Bible together.  This Mother/Daughter relationship is so important when it comes to raising up a God Girl!  We of course had a great deal of fun and food mixed in to create a memory that hopefully won’t soon be forgotten.

This past week on June 17th-22nd we attended Middle School Camp.  We had 128 campers at this event, and I must tell you it was one of the best weeks of camp I have ever been too.  We of course had a special concert from Icon for Hire .  If you haven’t checked them out yet, then you need too.  Seriously though we had 27 students make first time decisions for Christ!  That is incredible.  It was amazing to see what God was doing in the lives of these students.  Many students already had the idea that they wanted to make a decision, but they had questions that they wanted answers to.  From day one of this camp these conversations began, and clarity was found for many of these students.  I pray for each of them that this life changing decision is one that they take seriously.  God has moved in them and now they need to trust Him with everything.

Middle School students are a great gift from God!  They can be quirky and stinky at times, but they can also be some of the most understanding and insightful people you could ever spend time with.  I would encourage you to invest some time with a middle school student today.

Camp 3…God is Moving

What a wonderful day we had yesterday.  At rec time yesterday our family group was to go repelling.  I was tired, and really didn’t want to go, but I decided to do it so my students would do it too.  We got there and got ready, and it ended up that the student that I thought would need my encouragement the most went first.  That was awesome.  We did encourage him a lot, but he did it.  He was so excited to have accomplished this. We had a great time repelling.  I did repel, and I made it all the way down safely.

Last night we had a guest speaker come to camp.  He spoke on U-Turn!  He talked a lot about if you are on God’s side or Satan’s side.  He said if you are playing around with Satan’s side then we need to turn around and go the other direction.  He did a great job, and we had several students respond with the desire to be followers of Jesus.  We had students from my church and from my family group respond.  It is incredible to see students making decisions for Jesus, and if you didn’t already know it.  This is a goal in my ministry.  I want to see students making life changing decisions for Jesus.

After this time we got to do one of my favorite activities.  I was able to lead our students in an incredible game of GLOW-IN-THE-DARK DODGEBALL!  We had a blast.  The girls played first and we got ourselves a girls champion.  Then the boys came in and we got a boys champion.  Then we brought everyone back in to have the championship round. Boys against girls.  I was so proud of the boys team as they decided on their own to play left handed so they wouldn’t hurt any of the girls.  They were not suggesting that the girls were weak.  They were just showing respect for the girls.  The girls one and the boys were great sports about it.

Then we went to my favorite campfire of our time here.  My wife Molly spoke and she shared about her relationship with her parents.  She shared about some mistakes she made with her own parents, and she shared what the  Bible says about honoring our parents.  It was great and we had some students that really needed to hear what she said, and they responded to her message.

Over all it was just an incredible day at camp.  We have another incredible day planned today and we are excited to see what God has planned for today.  Please continue to pray for these students, and pray for all of us as we get tired as the week goes on.

Camp – The Next Day

Camp is going great!  We have a great group of junior high students and they are all pretty cool.  I love to see them opening up and sharing about specific situations in their lives.  Last night we had an awesome message brought to us about stopping and yielding to God.  We need to recognize areas we need to stop and let God lead us in.  God wants us to identify these areas in our own life and let him take control of those areas.

God will help us as much we let Him.  He wants to help us change, and He wants to see us totally trust Him.  We have to make that choice ourselves though.  Last night a couple boys in my family group shared things in their lives that they want to stop and move away from.  They are students who know that the examples they see from some adults aren’t the examples that they should follow.  They want to follow the example of Jesus!

It is incredible to share in these times when these students are learning about their life with Jesus!

We also had a great time yesterday swimming and going to the Low Ropes Course.  At the Low Ropes Course our family learned about teamwork and how Jesus is there to help us and save us!  It was an incredible experience and a great way for them to learn to trust each other.

Today will be an incredible day.  We have about 20 students taking a class on becoming a Christian, and we will be offering our first invitation tonight.

If you would pray for us and our students we would greatly appreciate it.  I hope to update you on things tomorrow.

Camp

This week I am enjoying time at Middle School Camp.  We are having a blast.  Yesterday our students got to go on the zipline.  They love the rush of flying down the line at crazy speeds.  I love to see them do it for the very first time.

They also went swimming and had the coolest homemade water slide I have ever seen.  We took a giant tarp and laid it down a hill.  Then we spread dawn dish soap on it and sprayed water.  Then let the fun begin.  It was amazingly fast and incredibly fun.

We also shared during several times with our family groups.  I have a group of 9 boys and we got to know each other pretty good yesterday.  I also had the opportunity to speak at worship last night.  Our goal with the lesson and family group last night was to get our students talking and sharing.  We wanted to let them know that it was ok to ask questions.  This is much like the message presented in our series “The Big Q

This worked really well.  All of the students in camp seemed to connect and get comfortable with us as adult leaders.

I have met some awesome people who are working with junior high students, and they are all struggling with many of the same issues.  I am finding that resources are a huge issue in junior high ministry.  I pray that juniorhighministry.org can be a resource for you as you work with junior high studetns.

We are looking forward to even more fun the rest of the week, and I am looking forward to sharing it with you.

I would love to hear about your camp experiences this summer.  Let me know what was cool for you and your junior high students.  If it is really cool I may even share it here in one of our posts.  Thanks!

The Moment

We must make sure we are in the moment when situations or issues arise for our students and their families.  Junior high students are still trying to figure out how to deal with tragedy, temptation, and regret.  We need to make sure we are there to help students process the decisions they are making.  We want them to make their decisions, but we want to help them see how to evaluate their decisions.

Recently a young marine from one of our communities was killed.  For many of our junior high students this was their first face to face encounter with somebody having to sacrifice their life for our freedom.  Many of our students knew this young man, and were struggling with dealing with the emotions and fears of a moment like this.

My job as junior high minister is not to take the pain and fear away from them.  I believe my job is to work along with their parents to help them understand what emotions they are actually dealing with.  We have to help a student understand why they are lashing out in anger when they are feeling upset about this situation.  We have to help junior high students see how this can lead to worse and worse issues if they don’t talk and evaluate the situation.

In other situations junior high students will get disappointed about a situation.  A young girl may find out that the boy of her dreams doesn’t like her.  This sounds like not a big deal to us, but in a junior highers mind this is terrible.  They feel that nobody will ever love them.  This girl may close herself up in her room and cut communication off from everyone.  This can lead to depression and other major problems.

Once again I am not called to make this pain go away, but I think we can help students put this into perspective.  I can help the student and the family see a good solution to the problem.

Preparation is key in any of these situations.  Junior high students need to be taught from the very beginning that pleasing God is our ultimate goal.  We are not here to please or impress other people. In Romans 12:2 it says this:

Don’t copy the behavior and customs of this world, but let God transform you into a new person by changing the way you think. Then you will learn to know God’s will for you, which is good and pleasing and perfect.

We need to always point students to God for their value.  Parents, friends, boyfriends, and girlfriends will always let us down, but if we put our trust in God he will transform us!

Be in the moment for your junior high students.  Guide them and teach them to rely on God even before these bad times come.
